paradoxicalgentleman asked: "I hope the “real” film and television industry crumbles and dies in our lifetimes anyway, so arguments from the perspective of those industries are hardly going to impress me." Could you elaborate on that? I don't watch much television and would like to know exactly what they're doing wrong.
Too much to really sum up in a single post, but to start with, mainstream television and film are still more or less under the tight control of a tyrannical elite who trample on creativity, funnel money and power to some of the most evil people in the world, chew up and discard those who do the very hardest work with little recognition, pander to the foulest common denominator, fight tooth and nail against our collective progress towards a freer, more open media environment and continue to uphold misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, sex-phobic, conformist anti-intellectualism.
I love many, many films and television shows, but even my favorites suffer from at least some of these problems and almost all are held back from their full potential by the enforcement of arbitrary and detrimental content standards or plain old resistance to anything too new or different.
On the internet, however, we are seeing the dawn of an entirely different system; one where creators are finding more and more outlets to express themselves their way, and we consumers are being given more and more power to decide what we get instead of waiting around for some corporate empire to fart out something halfway decent.
TL;DR - I seem to have turned into some sort of anarchistic hippie over the state of popular culture.
